About Amakaya Threads
Hand-crafted with intention
Our garments are only part of the story, Amakaya Threads is built on a foundation of personal relationships with a family in the Ucayali region, where the art of embroidery is inseparable from the everyday living.
We have a deep and sincere intention to play our role in seeing that the Shipibo people and their ancient craftmanship remains a vibrant, loved and lived practice in the future.

Cultural Stimulation

Traditionally Shipibo artisan skills gets passed down from mother to daughter. By valuing their work, we encourage the younger generation to continue to learn and keep the knowledge of these sacred geometric patterns and botanical insights alive.
The "Slow Thread" Philosophy

Because our work is tied to the lives of the women, we do not attempt to participate in any form of "fast fashion." Whether you are choosing a ready-to-ship piece from our Boutique, commissioning a custom size or ordering a Bespoke garment, you are supporting a process that respects the artist's time. A single piece can take weeks of focused work to complete, one stitch at a time.
Direct Economic Impact
For many of the women we collaborate with, embroidery is their primary form of income. We believe that by creating a sustainable platform for high-end, unique embroidery, we can help stimulate the local economy of the village of Pauyang and provide the financial stability they need. When you chose a piece from our collection, the money goes directly to the woman and their families.
A Brief Story Of Shipibo Embroidery
The creative heart of our collection is Lucia, a master embroiderer and the matriarch of the family we work with. Lucia is the wife of Ayahuascero Julio, and the sister-in-law of Maestro Richard—both key collaborator in our Amakaya Retreats.

When you wear Lucía's clothes, you are wearing the vision of a woman who understands the deep spiritual meaning of Kené patterns and plant medicines.
Lucia is currently passing her knowledge down to her daughters, who are become incredible artists in their own right.

What is Kené?
Every Amakaya blouse is more than a garment; it is a portal to the Shipibo-Konibo worldview. The intricate geometric patterns you see—known as Kené—are not merely decorative. They are a visual representation of the interconnectedness of all living things, a "living language" that maps the energy of the plants, the rivers, and the spirits of the Amazon.
Kené patterns are often inspired by the visions and medicinal songs (icaros) received from master teacher plants. Traditionally, these designs are believed to offer protection and harmony to the wearer, aligning their energy with the natural world.

We will be returning to the village of Pauyang this July and will soon be sharing personal introductions and stories from each daughter Bridget, Carola and little Melissa too. Together with their friends and neighbours, they form the collective of hands that bring our designs to life.
